The Greenway of the River Oglio

The river Oglio bike path was awarded the recognition as the most beautiful bike path in Italy by “Italian Green Road Award” Guide Prize in 2019. It stretches from the Tonale Pass (1,888 m above sea level) to the Padana plain, where the river Oglio flows into the Po. This bike tour is intended to get you to know the area, starting from the Tonale Pass, riding through the Camonica Valley and along Lake Iseo and then up to Franciacorta (renowned for its wines). You will find out about this amazing land, its history, art, culture and tastes, cycling from the high mountains down to the lake. A certified MTB guide will lead you through four tours featuring different challenges. Once joined together, they will show you wonderful views and colours.

TOUR 1 – From Tonale Pass to the Petroglyphs

Medium challenge and riding skills, the path presents dirty road stretches.
Rendezvous: Lovere, Piazzale Marconi at 8:30 and Pisogne, Santa Maria della Neve Church at 8:45.
Transfer by van to the tour departure point, then ride to the Tonale Pass, in a wonderful high mountain landscape, cycling on a dirt road to reach Ponte di Legno. That’s where the river Oglio forms. We will ride through the Camonica Valley and its ancient hamlets, on bike paths and dirt roads, with a lunch break at a typical Italian trattoria if you wish (not included in the price). Then off to the land of the prehistoric inhabitants, the Camuni, with its first Italian Unesco World Heritage site of Petroglyphs. Welcoming snack at the end of the tour and entrance to the site included in the price.
Price: starting from 75 Euros.
As we will be setting off from high mountain, we suggest taking a backpack with windbreaker, a warm top and gloves.

TOUR 2 – From the Middle Camonica Valley ( with renowned Unesco World Heritage site of Petroglyphs) to Lake Iseo

Challenge: minimum training required.
Rendezvous: Lovere, Piazzale Marconi at 9:00 and Pisogne, Santa Maria della Neve Church at 9:15. Transfer by van and departure from the Petroglyphs site for the complete bike tour along the river Oglio, on both dirt and asphalted road. Selecting among the numerous historic and artistic sites, we will take you to fortresses built on the remains of old dwellings dating back long before Medieval times, and you will discover how art developed in this valley. We will reach a pagan temple and admire a roman amphitheatre; find out about Brè, typical local cheese of Breno, and the lodge where it is aged. We may stop for a lunch break at a typical trattoria (not included in the price) and then off to the lake. Once there you may choose to visit either Pisogne, historical village on the lake with its famous church frescoes, or Lovere, awarded one of the most beautiful hamlets in Italy, with its art-gallery Accademia Tadini and the amazing Santa Maria in Valvendra cathedral, which you will be able to visit on your own.
Price: starting from 45 Euros.
Don’t forget your camera to capture wonderful views in Lovere or Pisogne.

TOUR 3 – Lake Iseo and Montisola

Challenge: easy route, minimum training required. For those who may wish to reach the sanctuary of the Virgin Mary of Ceriola on top of the island, good training is advisable due to gradients in some stretches.
Rendezvous: Lovere, Piazzale Marconi at 9:00 and Pisogne, Santa Maria della Neve Church at 9:15.
Here the river Oglio flows into Lake Iseo, and marks the border between the provinces of Bergamo and Brescia. We will ride along its bank as far as the pier and embark on the ferry with our bikes (tickets included in the price) to reach Montisola, awarded one of the most beautiful villages in Italy and the biggest inhabited European lake Island. Here in 2016 famous artist Christo achieved his work Floating Piers whose pictures you will see on display. We will go on cycling a complete round-trip of the island, through medieval hamlets and even up to the Virgin Mary of the Ceriola (600m above sea level), if you wish. Also, the Net Museum is not far, it tells about the life and work of people on this amazing island: access with pre-booking.
Lunch or coffee break at a beautiful panoramic terrace.
We will then board the ferry back to the mainland and have a final appetizer.
Price: starting from 55 Euros.
We suggest taking a windbreaker, sun cream and water bottle.

TOUR 4 – Along Franciacorta vineyards

Challenge: easy route (though completely dirt road through the vineyards) .
Rendezvous: Lovere, Piazzale Marconi at 9:00 and Pisogne, Santa Maria della Neve Church at 9:15.
Ride through the Franciacorta vineyards surrounded by the mountains that protect the area and make it famous for its wines, between Lake Iseo and the Natural Reserve of the Sebino peat land. We will go on cycling a complete round-trip through villages, wine farms, castles and wine cellars amid green fields and lines, coming across stretches of the “Gimondi Bike”, the mountain bike international competition track. Lunch at a trattoria or farmhouse if you wish (not included in the price) and visit+ tasting at a wine cellar (not included). At the end of the tour you will be offered a Franciacorta Grappa tasting.
Price: starting from 50 Euros.
We suggest taking a windbreaker, sun cream and water bottle.
