The exhibition, set up in the welcoming spaces of the Museo dell’Ottocento, on the second floor of Palazzo Tadini, represents a unique opportunity to explore Hayez’s pictorial world through the theme of romantic heroines, thanks to the presence of works from prestigious private collections.
The protagonists of the paintings – women overwhelmed by passions, dramatic destinies and profound ideals – perfectly embody the sensitivity of nineteenth-century Romanticism. With extraordinary expressive intensity, Hayez gives life to figures suspended between sentiment and sacrifice, transforming them into symbols of a tormented beauty and an era full of moral and civil tensions.
Among the works on display: Imelda de’ Lambertazzi (1853), inspired by a medieval tragedy with a heartbreaking ending, Louise de La Vallière (1838), a fascinating figure of the “troubadour” taste and two watercolours dedicated to Romeo and Juliet, which anticipate the emotional energy of the famous Kiss.
