Plato tells us that recognition (thimos) is the primary human need—not nourishment. This is because humans are essentially connected to one another. To exist, it’s enough to be generated, but to exist (and live well), it’s necessary to feel wanted. Listening is the way recognition is achieved. But be careful not to get confused. Communication also involves listening, but this is only of a sensorial nature. In intersubjective relationships, however, listening becomes dialogue, not mere conversation. The question arises: what structural factors make listening as mutual recognition so difficult today? What can be done to counteract them?
