Conference “Tra humanitas e scientia: il diabetologo di fama mondiale Stefano Del Prato”
Tuesday 5 May 2026 - h. 20:45
On Tuesday 5 May, Stefano Del Prato, a professor of Endocrinology at the University of Pisa and former president of the EASD (European Association for the Study of Diabetes), will meet with the citizens of the northern Sebino area and high school students in Lovere to discuss his medical practice and, in particular, his personal efforts to find a synthesis between the scientific medical approach and the care models inspired by the humanistic tradition he learned while attending the Decio Celeri Classical High School.
Stefano Del Prato will address the public on Tuesday 5 May, at 8:45 PM in the Sala degli Affreschi of the Tadini Academy (entrance from Piazza Garibaldi, 5). Free admission.
His scientific work currently focuses primarily on type 2 diabetes mellitus (a disease that affects approximately 4 million people in Italy alone), particularly its pathophysiology, insulin resistance, and the development of innovative therapies. Stefano Del Prato, 74, is internationally considered a leading figure in the treatment and prevention of this disease and has helped develop global guidelines for diabetes care.
“The meeting with Stefano Del Prato was strongly encouraged by President Graziano Martinelli, who had shared part of his training with him. Del Prato’s work,” emphasizes Marco Albertario, director of the Tadini Academy, “reveals the rigor of his scientific culture: experimental research, clinical validation, and participation in international guidelines. However, diabetology is also a deeply human discipline, requiring attention to the patient’s quality of life, prevention, and health education. This implicitly introduces a dimension typical of classical culture: understanding the individual, communication skills, and ethical responsibility. Doctors do not simply interpret biological data; they must also interpret needs, behaviors, and social contexts. In Tadini, an expression of Count Luigi Tadini’s philanthropy and appreciation for beauty, we will seek with Stefano Del Prato to understand how these principles have influenced his practice and the prospects for the development of modern medicine, between so-called holistic approaches and the demands imposed by medical hyper-specialization.” Added to all this are the ethical and scientific challenges posed by new technologies.
