Little ex-Church of Nigrignano
The story behind this ancient building is nothing short of incredible: built almost a thousand years ago, over the centuries it was reorganised and purchased by private individuals; it slowly shed its age-old function and became a production site and then was incorporated into an industrial complex which totally stripped it of its architectural identity. The internal walls were completely covered over, hiding the various sculptures of saints and religious figures. Extraordinarily, however, it was the lack of care over the years that saved it, as the majority of the church’s architectural and sculptural elements were preserved intact. Prompt interventions have consolidated the entire original structure, but drastic work was necessary to replace the roof due to damage caused by time.
