SILVESTRI PALACE
Palazzo Silvestri is one of the most important buildings in the village of San Martino di Sovere. Initially built as a country villa, in 1800 it was owned by the Crescenzi family. Subsequently, in 1850, the villa was bought by Girolamo Silvestri, an important figure in the economic and cultural life of the period, who restructured and expanded it, transforming it into a highly prestigious palace. The building reflects the characteristics of harmony and elegance typical of neoclassical architecture.
The external architecture is perfectly geometric with simple volumes, sober decorations and harmonious dimensions. The south facade, which overlooks the Silvestri park, is more articulated and airy, formed by a balanced alternation of solids and voids. The interiors are elegantly decorated with painted marbles, stucco decorations, Venetian-style floor mosaics and an important cycle of frescoes inspired by the theme of Italian unification and created by the neoclassical painter Antonio Guadagnini.
In 1942, at the behest of Senator Giovanni Silvestri, the building became an Opera Pia intended for anti-tubercular assistance. Today the building is municipal property, under the supervision of the Superintendency, and houses the “D. Spade”.
