Sanctuary of St. Stefano
Located at the foot of Monte Orfano, it was originally a diakonia for the relief of wayfarers. It was erected in 700 AD, when the Lombards were settled in Italy.
Originally very small and with only one nave, the church was later enlarged as the number of worshippers increased; the last renovation was in 1982.
The façade appears with its beautiful rose window, arches and ornaments, while inside, among the numerous frescoes, the Madonna with the Child Jesus and Christ Pantocrator (datable to around the end of the 15th century) stand out.
On the altar (inside a marble throne in neo-Gothic style) is the image of the Madonna and Child Jesus: the figure in a frontal position (painted according to grotesque canons) is dressed in a green tunic, a red mantle, a white veil falling from her head and holding a rose; on the basin of the main chapel is a Christ Pantocrator seated on a rainbow (according to Byzantine iconography), to the right of which are inserted a mountain reminiscent of the forms of Monte Orfano, the Church of the Annunziata and St Michael.
The church is particularly popular, even outside the borders of Rovato, and is the site of wedding celebrations.
