MTB itinerary to discover some villages of Valcalepio and climb to San Giovanni delle Formiche.

DE – MTB-Route zur Entdeckung einiger Dörfer des Valcalepio und Aufstieg nach San Giovanni delle Formiche.

The path / der Weg

Once we’ve left our car in the town of Villongo near the church theatre, we go along the provincial road to Credaro. At the second traffic light of the town, we turn left into Via San Francesco d’Assisi. We follow the directions for Capriolo and then turn right, slightly downhill, into Via Luigi Cadorna. On our left, there’s the church of Saint Fermo. At the bottom and after the bottleneck, at the stop sign we keep to our right towards Castelli di Calepio. The languid river Oglio accompanies us on our left for about 500 meters then we turn right going uphill (in front of us the Castello di Trebecco). At the stop sign on our left, along the main road we reach Grumello del Monte, where, at the Parish, we turn right into Via Aldo Moro, following the directions for Gandosso. Here we find the first real slope. On our right, just after a couple of hundred meters, we see Castello Gonzaga. The road leading to the church of Saint Pantaleone is slightly downhill and so we can breathe more easily. We go uphill again, then turn left at the junction and enter the town of Gandosso. The road is level and we can catch our breath again and admire the view of the lake on our right. At the stop sign, we go straight ahead toward the Parco del Pitone. Arriving at the Park, we go slightly downhill, following the directions for trail 701 (3km on a narrow trail where we must be careful) that takes us to San Giovanni delle Formiche. From there it’s all downhill, passing through Foresto Sparso, to Villongo where we started off.

DE – Man parkt das Auto auf dem Parkplatz am Dorfeingang von Villongo, in der Nähe des Pfarrtheaters, und nimmt die Provinzstraße hinauf nach Credaro. Am ersten Kreisverkehr biegt man links in die Via C. Battisti bis zum Friedhofskreisverkehr ab, dann rechts in die Via Don Gualandris und folgt dann den Schildern nach Capriolo. Man biegt rechts ab und leicht bergab in die Via Luigi Cadorna. Links gibt es die Kirche San Fermo. Am Ende des Abstiegs und nach der Engstelle hält man sich am Stoppschild rechts in Richtung Castelli di Calepio. Der friedliche Fluss Oglio fließt für etwa 500 Meter lang auf der linken Seite, dann biegt man rechts bergauf ab (vorne steht das Schloss von Trebecco). Am Stoppschild biegt man links ab und folgt der Staatsstraße nach Grumello del Monte, wo man die Pfarrkirche erreicht und rechts in die Via Aldo Moro abbiegt und den Schildern nach Gandosso folgt. Hier beginnt der erste richtige Anstieg der Reiseroute. Auf der rechten Seite sieht man nach ein paar hundert Metern das Schloss Gonzaga. Vor der Kirche San Pantaleone kann man sich dank der leicht bergab führenden Straße kurz erholen. Man geht weiter bergauf und biegt an der Umleitung links in Richtung der Stadt Gandosso ab. Die Straße wird flacher und ermöglicht es, neue Energie zu tanken und die Aussicht auf den See zu unserer Rechten zu genießen. Am Stoppschild fährt man geradeaus weiter in Richtung Parco del Pitone. Am Eingang des Parks angekommen, folgt man der Beschilderung zum Weg 701 leicht bergab (3 km auf einem schmalen Pfad, Vorsicht!), der nach San Giovanni delle Formiche führt. Eine lange und schöne Abfahrt führt zurück über Foresto Sparso nach Villongo und zum Ausgangspunkt.

Follow the signs for Lake Iseo and follow until you get in Villongo.
It is possible to park near the starting point., along Via Verdi or at the Cemetery of Villongo Sant’Alessandro.
