The path/Der Weg

Park your car in front of the Strada del Franciacorta offices (Via Verdi, 53 – Erbusco) and turn right up the road. At the stop sign keep straight along Via Verdi, still uphill. Beautiful Villa Lechi and Palazzo Longhi de Carli are visible to your left. Continue downhill on Via Verdi, along a long wall, and then turn right onto Via Metelli, with views of Monte Orfano, and cross a residential area.

The itinerary continues along Via Villa Nuova and Via San Giorgio. In the small centre of Villa hamlet there is an isolated bell tower. At the roundabout turn left onto Via Crocefissa which is lined with old farmhouses. At the junction, turn left uphill onto Via Pedergnano Sotto. At the stop sign continue on the same road, admiring the vineyards and views of lower Franciacorta, then uphill again on Via Mattina. At the stop sign, turn right downhill to the provincial road to Iseo, which you take for 1200 metres as far as the sign for Calino where you turn right for a gentle ascent to Via Sala. Here a road through the vineyards leads you to the residential part of town. Turn right at the war memorial on Via Paolo VI, following signs for Bornato.

At the roundabout, turn left downhill onto Via San Michele and, at the stop sign, turn left again and continue to the village of Bornato. After crossing the level crossing, continue on Via Basso Castello and ascend a narrow uphill road to Castello Bornato, surrounded by massive stone walls. Turn right onto a narrow road to the entrance and then left along a narrow downhill cobbled street lined with ancient buildings and walls. At the end of the cobbles, turn left into a shady street. At the stop sign, turn right towards a level crossing and, after crossing it, take the long cycle track to Barco di Cazzago passing Chiesetta della Madonna della Zucchella along the way.

The cycle path continues for several kilometres as far as traffic lights in Cazzago San Martino. After the level crossing take Via Rizzini, still on the cycle path, to the sculpture called “The Wheel”. Turn left into Via Per Rovato, passing over the highway.

After a short stretch through the industrial area follow signs to the centre of Rovato, going straight through the roundabout. At the traffic lights, turn right into Via San Rocco through historic houses with elegant stone doorways. At the small roundabout, with Quistini castle in front of you, turn left onto Via Bonomelli and, before crossing the centre of the town, turn right towards the market area in Viale Conte Eugenio Martinengo Cesaresco. You are facing Monte Orfano, which will be beside you for the remainder of the route. Take Via Martinengo downhill and, at the bend, turn right to detour to Convento della Santissima Annunciata after a kilometre of uphill cobbled road. If you’re not interested in visiting the convent, stop off to visit Chiesa di S. Stefano at the beginning of the climb instead. Retrace your steps and turn right onto Via Bettini, continuing downhill to Via Gigli. At the end of the street, turn right towards Coccaglio on Via Vittorio Emanuele II, thus arriving at the centre of the town in Piazza Luca Marenzio, noting the Roman tower on your left and the parish church on your right. After the traffic lights, turn right onto Via Martiri della Libertà (you can turn onto the small cycle path despite the one way sign) and continue on Via San Pietro, with the church of the same name on your right.

You are now following a beautiful, long, wide cycle path to Cologne. At the end of this road, continue straight on for a few hundred metres, returning to the cycle path again a little further on in Via Vittorio Emanuele and Piazza Garibaldi. Now follow signs to Adro and Iseo. Turn right into Via Cappuccini and continue to Spina, emerging in Via Marconi. Turn right at the traffic lights, following signs for Erbusco-Rovato, and right again at the roundabout into Via Fontanelle, which is flanked by vineyards. Turn right onto Via Volta, gently uphill. Continue on the underpass to Zocco d’Erbusco, onto Via Costa to the traffic lights, where you cross the provincial road. Via Verdi is in front of you now. Follow it and you will soon be back at the offices of the Strada del Franciacorta (on your right), where this pleasant itinerary ends.

DE – Nachdem wir das Auto vor dem Hauptquartier der „Strada del Franciacorta“ (Via Verdi, 53 – Erbusco) geparkt haben, nehmen wir rechts den ansteigenden Weg. Am Stoppschild fahren wir geradeaus auf der Via Verdi immer bergauf. Zu unserer Linken können wir die wunderschöne Villa Lechi und den Palazzo Longhi de Carli bewundern. Weiter bergab auf der Via Verdi fahren wir eine lange Mauer entlang, dann rechts in die Via Metelli, blicken in Richtung Monte Orfano und durchqueren eine Wohngegend.

Die Straße führt weiter durch die Via Villa Nuova und die Via S.Giorgio. Im kleinen Zentrum des Weilers Villa steht isoliert der Glockenturm: beim Kreisverkehr biegen wir links in die Via Crocefissa, an alten Häusern entlang. An der Kreuzung nehmen wir links im Aufstieg die Via Pedergnano Sotto. Beim Stoppschild fahren wir auf der gleichen Straße weiter, von der aus wir die Weinberge und die Aussicht auf die untere Franciacorta bewundern können, und dann wieder bergauf in die Via Mattina. Am Stoppschild biegen wir rechts ab und fahren hinunter bis zur „Strada Provinciale“ nach Iseo, auf der wir 1200 Meter bis zum Schild nach Calino weiterfahren, wo wir rechts abbiegen und eine leichte Steigung uns zur Via Sala bringt. Hier führt uns eine Straße zwischen Weinbergen in die Ortschaft, wo wir auf der Höhe des Kriegsdenkmals rechts in die Via Paolo VI einbiegen und der Beschilderung nach Bornato folgen.

Am Kreisverkehr biegen wir links in die abfallende Via San Michele; beim Stoppschild biegen wir wieder links ab und radeln in den Ort Bornato hinein. Nach der Überquerung des Bahnübergangs, fahren wir auf der Via Basso Castello und bewältigen eine schmale Steigung, die uns zur Burg Bornato führt, die von massiven Steinmauern umgeben ist. Ein Weg führt rechts zum Eingang, dann radeln wir links auf Kopfsteinpflaster eine schmale Straße hinunter, an alten Gebäuden und Mauern vorbei. Am Ende des Kopfsteinpflasters fahren wir links auf einer schattigen Straße weiter. Am Stoppschild biegen wir rechts ab in Richtung Bahnübergang und danach nehmen wir einen langen Radweg bis Barco di Cazzago. Auf dem Weg bewundern wir die Kirche „Madonna della Zucchella“.

Der Radweg führt weiter über einige Kilometer zur Verkehrsampel von Cazzago San Martino. Nach dem Bahnübergang nehmen wir die Via Rizzini und fahren immer noch weiter auf dem Radweg bis zur Skulptur „La Ruota“ (Das Rad). Wir biegen links in die Via Per Rovato und überqueren die Autobahn.

Nach einer kurzen Strecke im Industriegebiet folgen wir der Beschilderung zum Zentrum von Rovato und fahren am Kreisverkehr geradeaus. An der Ampel biegen wir rechts in die Via San Rocco ab, wo wir auf alte Häuser mit eleganten Steinportalen treffen. Am kleinen Kreisverkehr angelangt bewundern wir das Schloss Quistini vor uns und biegen links in die Via Bonomelli und vor der Durchquerung des Stadtzentrums biegen wir rechts ab in Richtung Marktbereich auf der Viale Conte Eugenio Martinengo Cesaresco. Der Monte Orfano erhebt sich vor uns und wird für den Rest der Route an unserer Seite sein. Wir nehmen bergabfahrend die Via Martinengo und biegen in einer Kurve rechts ab, um auf einem Umweg nach einem Kilometer Steigung auf Kopfsteinpflasterstraße das Kloster der Santissima Annunciata (Heilige Verkündigung) zu erreichen. Wenn wir nicht bis zum Kloster fahren möchten, können wir einen Halt einlegen und die Kirche von S. Stefano am Beginn des Aufstiegs besichtigen. Zurück auf unserem Weg biegen wir nach rechts in die Via Bettini, die hinab zur Via Gigli führt. Am Ende der Straße biegen wir rechts in die Via Vittorio Emanuele II Richtung Coccaglio und gelangen so auf die Piazza Luca Marenzio im Ortszentrum: Linker Hand können wir den römischen Turm und zur Rechten die Pfarrkirche erkennen. Nach der Ampel nehmen wir rechts die Via Martiri della Libertà (der kleine Radweg erlaubt es uns, trotz Einbahnstraße einzubiegen), fahren weiter in die Via San Pietro und begegnen rechter Hand der Kirche gleichen Namens.

Wir radeln jetzt auf einem schönen, breiten und langen Radweg bis Cologne. Am Ende fahren wir ein paar hundert Meter weiter geradeaus und finden den Radweg nur wenig weiter vorn in der Via Vittorio Emanuele und Piazza Garibaldi wieder. Nun folgen wir den Wegweisern nach Adro und Iseo. Wir biegen rechts in die Via Cappuccini bis wir in die Ortschaft Spina gelangen und kommen in Via Marconi an. An der Ampel biegen wir rechts ab und folgen der Beschilderung nach Erbusco-Rovato und biegen im Kreisverkehr erneut rechts in die von Weinbergen gesäumte Via Fontanelle ab, bis wir zur Rechten Via Volta in leichtem Anstieg kreuzen. Nach der Unterführung sind wir in Zocco d’Erbusco in der Via Costa und fahren weiter bis zur Verengung mit einer Verkehrsampel, die uns erlaubt, die „Strada Provinciale“ sicher zu überqueren. Gerade vor uns liegt die Via Verdi: wir folgen ihr und fahren rechts zurück zum Sitz der „Strada del Franciacorta“, wo diese erlebnisreiche Route endet.
