The trail / der Weg

The third stretch is one of the most beautiful and charming stretches of the Antica Strada Valeriana route. After some ups and downs, you will leave the houses behind by taking a mule track that will get steeper and steeper. The houses, once rural dwellings, are rare. After about 20 minutes you will come across the path which connects Distone to Massenzano, joining the coastal road near the Hotel Motta. Follow the path for a few metres toward the upper lake up to the houses of Rango, after which you will go downhill. After Piaser’s houses, walk through the ancient rural village of Massenzano, built on a solid dolomitic base and made of wood and stone houses, joined together by little cobbled lanes. Walk a short slope along the asphalt of via Matteotti up to the first hairpin and, then, the Valeriana continues among dry-stone walls which support old terracing. This part of the lake is characterised by olive groves that play an important role in the local economy. In this area well protected against the cold north winds even some specimen of Indian fig (Opuntia ficus indica) can be found, which testify to the influente of the Mediterranean climate.

DE – Der Aufstieg auf Saumpfaden wird energisch. Man überquert spärliche Häuser, ehemals ländliche Wohnhäuser, die jetzt als Wohnhäuser genutzt werden. Nach ca. 20 Minuten findet man die Straße, die Distone mit Massenzano verbindet und in der Nähe des Hotel Motta an die Küstenstraße mündet. Man begeht ein kurzes Stück weiter in Richtung des oberen Teils des Sees, bis man an den Häusern von Rango vorbeikommt, wo man einen Pfad bergab geht. Nachdem man die Häuser von Piaser passiert hat, überquert man das alte ländliche Dorf Massenzano, das aus dichten Häusern aus Stein und Holz besteht, die durch kurze Kopfsteinpflasterstraßen verbunden sind. Es ist notwending, einen kurzen Aufstieg entlang des Asphalts der via Matteotti bis zur ersten Kurve zu machen, und dann führt die Antica Strada Valeriana durch Trockenmauern, die alte Terrassen tragen. Hier findet man die ausgedehnten Olivenhaine, die diesen Abschnitt des Sees so berühmt machen und für die lokale Wirtschaft von erheblicher Bedeutung sind. In diesem vor den kalten Nordwinden geschützten Gebiet gibt es auch Feigenkaktus (Opuntia ficus indica), dass das mediterrane Klima weiter bestätigt.

How to arrive and where to park / Anreise und Parkplätze

Follow the direction to Lake Iseo and take the SP 510 with direction Pisogne – exit in Sulzano. From Sulzano city centre, go along the coastal road towards north until you reach Sale Marasino.

Parking spaces are present both in the centre of Sale Marasino and in Colpiano (Marone).

DE – Man muss den Anfahrtsbeschreibungen zum Iseosee und dann die SP 510 Straße Richtung Pisogne folgen – Ausfahrt Sulzano. Vom Sulzanos Zentrum, fährt weiter auf der Küstenstraße nach Norden, bis man Sale Marasino erreicht.

Es gibt Parkplätze sowohl im Sale Marasinos Zentrum, als auch in Colpiano (Marone).
