Pilzone d’Iseo is situated between Montecolo and the cleft over which a careful eye can perceive the top of the San Fermo’s bell tower (far from this route). This village is the starting point of the Antica Strada Valeriana route.

The trail / der Weg

This journey through time and the unique beauties of Lake Iseo starts from Piazza Basilio Cittadini, near the Parish Church dedicated to Saints Paul and Peter. Climbing on the left, take via Volontari del Sangue from where one can enjoy an enchanting panorama over Montecolo and the lower part of the lake. After about ten minutes you will cross a modest stream called Vaglio. A stretch of paved road and equipped for disabled people starts. Lining the road you will see chestnuts and hazels framing the view of the Prealps and of Monte Isola – the largest European lake island – which will follow you along most of the route. After getting over a red house(literally called “La Casa Rossa”),  go through a little wood in which there are specimens of european hophornbeam  (Ostrya carpinifolia is its scientific name) and downy oak (Quercus pubescens). Here you will find a comfortable area equipped with benches, tables (and a parking space for disabled people). In autumn, it is possible to recognize beside the carriageway the red berries of the butcher’s broom (Ruscus aculeatus) a common species in Brescia’s Prealps. A little further on, the road enters a hairpin of the carriageway that joins Sulzano to Gazzane and Tassano. Walking through Gazzane’s houses, one can notice that most have been recently built, while others are old rural buildings made of the stones carried by the glaciations and thanks to which today it is possible to decode the complex geological history of the entire Valcamonica. Keep on walking along the paved road up to Tassano, reaching the Church of St Fermo, the farmers’ patron (this is the reason why a lot of churches are dedicated to him). This church deserves a visit since from there the view of Monte Isola and Corna Trentapassi is wonderful. Once gone beyond the Vaiorzo Valley, rich in olive trees (Olea europea) you will arrive at Tassano. It is possible to enter the village by turning into the track that comes from your left just before the village and takes to the church of Saints Faustino and Giovita, also the patrons of Brescia.

DE – In der Nähe der Pfarrkirche, die den Heiligen Peter und Paul gewidmet ist, befindet sich Piazza Basilio Cittadini, von der aus die ersten Schritte für eine Zeitreise durch die einzigartigen Schönheiten des Iseosees stattfinden. Wenn man links nach oben geht, nimmt man via Volontari del Sangue, wo man zwischen den letzten Häusern einen Blick auf Montecolo und den unteren Teil des sees hat. Nach ungefähr zehn Minuten überquert man den Vaglio Bach, der direkt unterhalb von Punta dell’Orto entspringt. Ab hier beginnt eine flache Strecke, die zementiert und für Behinderte ausgerüstet ist. An den Seiten der Straße rahmen Kastanien- und Haselnuss-Exemplare den Blick auf die Bergamo-Voralpen und die größte Seeinsel Europas (Monte Isola) ein, die den größten Teil der Antica Strada begleiten wird. Nach dem “Casa Rossa” überquert man ein kleines Waldgebiet, in dem man Exemplare von Hainbuchen (Ostrya carpinifolia ist der wissenschaftliche Name) und Falscheiche (Quercus pubescens) erkennen kann. Hier gibt es einen Rastplatz mit Bänken und Tischen und einen für Behinderte reservierten Parkplatz. In der Saison kann man im Unterholz am Straßenrand die roten Beeren des Metzgerbesen (Ruscus aculeatus) erkennen. Etwas weiter, in Panoramaposition, mündet die Straße in eine Kurve, die Sulzano mit Gazzane und Tassano verbindet. Man geht bergauf durch die Häuser von Gazzane, viele der jüngsten Bauarbeiten, die sich mit alten ländlichen Gebäuden vermischen, aus bunten Steinen, die während der Vereisungen transportiert wurden und dank derer es möglich ist, die gegliederte geologische Geschichte der gesamten Valcamonica zu lesen. Man fährt weiter auf der asphaltierten Straße, die man erst nach Tassano verlassen wird, und erreicht bald die Kirche San Fermo, den Beschützer der Bauern (aus diesem Grund sind viele Kirchen ihm gewidmet), von der aus man wunderbare Blicke auf Monte Isola und Corna Trentapassi genießen kann. Nachdem mandas Vaiorzo-Tal mit seinen zahlreichen Olivenbäumen (Olea europea) passiert hat, erreichet man Tassano. Das Dorf ist über die kleine Straße erreichbar, die die Stadt von links vorwegnimmt und von vorne zur Kirche der Heiligen Faustino und Giovita führt.
